1968: Championship class
The European Nations’ Cup became the European Football
Championship for 1968, and 31 teams entered.
Coin toss decides finalist The semi-finals saw hosts Italy
defeat the Soviet Union on the toss of a coin while Yugoslavia
defeated England. In the final, Yugoslavia, 1-0 up, were still
being made to retreat at a free-kick when Italy took the kick
and scored. The goal was allowed to stand. After no further
scoring, the game went to a replay. The Italians made five
changes for the match, the Yugoslavs none: tiredness eventually
told and the Italians won 2-0.
1964: Spanish success
In 1964, 29 of the 32 European nations entered the competition
this time with the finals taking place in Spain.
Hosts win The Soviet Union were there once again – they
comfortably won their semi-final against Denmark 3-0 – and
Hungary played and lost to the hosts. Spain met the Soviet Union
in the final, and this time General Franco allowed the match to
proceed. In heavy rain and in front of 79,115 people in
Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, Spain won 2-1.
1960: Yashin stars
Yugoslavia, Czechoslovakia and the Soviet Union filled the
remaining three places alongside the hosts, France.
Late Ponedelnik winner In the final, USSR, with Lev Yashin
starring in goal, overcame Yugoslavia 2-1 with Viktor Ponedelnik
scoring the winner for the Soviet Union with seven minutes
remaining.
