READING

It is a requirement that you have a CHAPTER BOOK in class with you at all times. Choose a book that consists of a reading level that is not too difficult for you to read and understand. It is important that you choose a chapter book that you know you will enjoy reading and one that you know you will finish reading as well.

READING GENRE

READING "GENRE" refers to the "type" or "category" of reading material you read. It is important to remember that throughout the school year, you need to experience reading a variety of genre.

READING GENRE LIST: Nonfiction, Autobiography, Biography, Historical Fiction, Science Fiction, Fable, Fairy Tale, Fantasy, Folktale, Legend, Mythology, Drama Mystery, Poetry, Short Stories, Humor, Adventure.

HOME READING RECORD

The HOME READING RECORD worksheet is designed to help you keep track of all the reading you do at home. The required nightly reading time is no less than 15 minutes. (Of course, more is even better!) Every time you read, you will use the HOME READING RECORD worksheet to mark down the amount of time that you read, the title of the source that you read (the source may be a chapter book, a book read to a younger sibling, a text book, newspaper, etc.), and how many pages you read. You need to have a parent sign the HOME READING RECORD worksheet every night that you read. When you have reached a total reading time of 300 minutes (five hours), hand in your HOME READING RECORD worksheet to me, and you will be given an award in class for your super reading accomplishments! You will earn an award every time you accomplish 300 minutes of reading time. How many reading awards will YOU accomplish this year? The sky is the limit!

LANGUAGE

Your English Language grade consists of the following: the proper use of grammar in oral language (the spoken word), the proper use of grammar in all written work, and the proper use of mechanics (punctuation). Writing the English language is an on-going learning process. You will learn how to use the multi-step writing process in class. It is important to remember that you need to use the skills you have learned in your Language classes in your everyday writing.

WRITING

The following list is a handy checklist named "THE FIVE DID DOs". We use this list together and independently when we do all of our WRITING:
    THE FIVE DID DOs:
  1. Did I indent?
  2. Did I spell correctly?
  3. Did I capitalize correctly?
  4. Did I use the correct punctuation?
  5. Did I write neatly?

SPELLING

You are required to take a Spelling Pretest at the beginning of the week, and a Final Spelling Test at the end of the week. There are 20 words on the Spelling List. I will also give a 5 pt. bonus dictation sentence for every Spelling Test that you take. You will be assigned various writing activities to do for each weekly Spelling Lesson. Your SPELLING GRADE will include your APPLIED SPELLING skills (everyday spelling in your writing) along with your FORMAL SPELLING grades.

PRACTICE your Spelling words by requesting someone in your household to give you an oral quiz of your Spelling List. Many children in my classes have found it helpful to take a written Spelling Test at home for practice. Please know and understand the Spelling Rules and meanings of the words for the week's Spelling List.

MATH

You will discover in your Math class that learning MATH IS FUN! Math classes include working with a partner, working in a group with friends, using the board to work out problems with your classmates' and teacher's help, using manipulatives for your lessons, and playing Math Games.

Math homework is given Monday through Thursday. You are required to master the MULTIPLICATION and DIVISION facts. It is very important that you study the math facts every night for at least 15 minutes. Please ask a parent to help you learn the facts until you become proficient in this area. Begin by mastering the MULTIPLICATION FACTS first, and then move on to master the DIVISION FACTS.

Your Math grade will include: Tests, Quizzes (announced and unannounced), Homework, Classwork, Listening Skills, and Participation. It is very important to ask questions and to LET ME KNOW if you are having any difficulty in any area of Math. Check out the Math Links that I have provided for you at the bottom of this page. There you will find some Math games which will help you to master your Math Facts!
