Species Main | Wookiee - Wookiee Culture
A fierce yet at the same time gentle and brave race, the
arboreal Wookiees of Kashyyyk were an imposing sight,
but to many they were helpful aquaintances, trusted
companions and life-long friends.

Wookiees were well-known for being powerful warriors,
and were also considered to be excellent workers by the
slavers of the galaxy. However, it took a lot to tame them,
as Wookiees did not exactly possess the highest levels
of tolerance. When angered, Wookiees would go into a
rage, using their powerful arms and concealed claws to
fling foes clean off their feet, and generally do as much
damage as they could.

Yet Wookiees were not always short-tempered beasts; they kept to strict honour codes, and were very loyal to their friends. Wookiee society also included life-debts, as seen in other species. If another being were to save a Wookiee's life, that Wookiee would swear to protect them their whole lives. This life-debt could actually cause problems for some Wookiees; before they knew what was happening, they could be tagged to an Imperial slaver for life. Many Wookiees were subjugated by slavers for labor work, or even skinned for their pelts. If a bounty hunter displayed Wookiee braids on their body, they were considered to be formidable indeed.

Wookiees were also known for their mechanical skills; while their appearance suggested they were clumsy brutes, most Wookiees could be very gentle if need be. They could preform intricate repairs, handle their young with great care, and construct the great tree villiages on Kashyyyk.
Though early drafts of Star Wars called Chewbacca a 'Wookie' - or even a 'Wookee' - the correct spelling is 'Wookiee'
