Wookiees originally lived in the jungles of Yavin rather than the forests of Kashyyyk - at least in early drafts of Star Wars. General Skywalker met a group of shaggy aliens on Yavin, and enlisted them in the battle against the Empire |
As the Wookiee homeworld of Kashyyyk was filled with simple tree villiages and little in the way of advanced technology, one might have thought that Wookiees were uncom- fortable with technology. The truth was far from it. Wookiees were quite at home with all kinds of machines and gadgets. As well as being handy with a hydrospanner, Wookiees also developed the bowcaster. A high-powered projectile weapon, the bowcaster became the traditional hunting weapon of the arboreal Wookiees. The city of Thikkiiana was also the home of a key computer component manufacturer for the New Republic. Despite these technological advancements, the Wookiees still kept scrictly to their roots. The Wookiees had a great affinity with nature, and were very respectful of all its forms. While building their tree cities, they took great care not to damage the trees, and tried to incorporate much of the city into the trees themselves. Their lives were simple - they rejected materialism long ago - though they kept a complicated lineage structure, as well as various traditions such as Life Day and the sacred life-debt. Wookiees also had deep respect for families, and kept the tradition of an 'honour family', which comprised of the Wookiee's closest friends, even if they were of another species. Despite living at peace with their world, the Wookiees were not left at peace by the galaxy. Though they were happy to be represented in the Republic, the Empire brought nothing but trouble to Kashyyyk. The Wookiees got involved in early fights against the Empire, at a time when the Jedi were being hunted down. Many Wookiees died in the battles, and yet more became slaves, thanks to a deal between the Empire and the Wookiee-hating Trandoshans. Luckily, when the Empire fell, members of the New Republic - including the famed Wookiee, Chewbacca - launched rescue missions to free all the enslaved Wookiees. |
