Like all other slaves, Anakin and Shmi Skywalker lived
in a small, spartan hovel, which forced them to get by
with very little.
Although the Skywalker hovel was small by ordinary
standards, it was actually bigger than most other slave
quarters used by only two slaves. Because Watto found
he could not afford more slaves, he was forced to give
the Skywalkers a larger hovel. It was certainly better
than the hovel they shared with six others when owned
by Gardulla the Hutt.
The Skywalker hovel rested on the ground floor of a block of other hovels in Slave Quarters Row. Inside, Watto's neglect was apparent in the shabbiness of the hovel, despite Shmi's best efforts. The central room featured a food preperation area, a dining table and - though there was barely room for it - the hovel's barely functioning bioconverter generator. Like all other slave hovels, the Skywalker hut had basic ameneties, but lacked any luxurious items found in a more affluent household. Thus, the Skywalkers had to make do with Slave Quarter Row's single moisture vaporator for water.
The hovel also featured two bedrooms. Shmi's bedroom was smaller than her sons', as Shmi wanted Anakin to enjoy what little freedom he had. Barely larger than a cupboard, Shmi's room also featured her workstation, which was usually piled up with various gadgets and machinery. Anakin's room was also cluttered, with a home-made protocol droid on a table against the wall. Various machine parts also lay strewn across the boy's floor and bed. A space behind the hovel secreted Anakin's podracer, which he had been working on for years. One day, he dreamed of flying away from the slave quarters with his mother to start a new life.... |
