Tatooine's modern history was made famous by the two
sons of the suns, Luke and Anakin Skywalker. However,
the planet's complete history began long before the
Skywalkers.

When early survey ships first arrived in the Tatoo
system, they considered Tatooine to be a third sun,
circling the large G1 and G2 stars at the heart of the
system. However, upon closer inspection, the explorers
realized they had come across a habitable planet. They
named their new discovery 'Tatooine'. They found vast
canyons on the planet's surface, which suggested the
planet had once been covered by water. Tatooine then came to the attention of miners, who believed that Tatooine's surface was full of metallic ores. Fleets of mining ships arrived, carrying the first generation of human colonists - later referred to as the 'Oldsters' by their descendants. Many of the labourers homeless and poor; the harsh conditions of Tatooine were almost welcome for them. The miners lived in cheap sandstone huts to protect themselves from the elements, and worked onboard huge mining vehicles called sandcrawlers. However, despite the miners' hard work, they came to realize their endevour was fruitless. The magnetic ores they unearthed proved useless and dangerous. The mining enterprise was abandoned, and the miners left Tatooine, leaving the poor labourers behind. They couldn't afford to escape Tatooine, and the Republic did not come to their aid. This bitterness towards the Republic would be passed on through the generations.

The first colony ship to arrive during the exploration of Tatooine crash-landed on the planet while transporting labourers to mining facilities. Its ruined carcass became the centerpoint of a small settlement that grew around it. This town expanded over time, until it became a large spaceport city: Mos Eisley. More settlements were created across the planet - including Fort Tusken, which was raided by sandpeople, and thus gave the desert nomads the name 'Tusken Raiders' - as well as various homesteads and moisture farms scattered across the deserts. Moisture farms were the only way to extract water from Tatooine, and made their owners tough and independant. Many spaceports were set up to build on a major nexus between hyperspace trade routes near the planet.

With trade and smugglers came crime and gangsters, and soon various criminal organizations were battling for supremacy of Tatooine. These space battles left ruins scattered across Tatooine, giving the native Jawas - who had taken over the abandoned sandcrawlers - parts to sell on that would become a tradition for the species. However, in the battles for Tatooine, there could only be one victor: the Hutts. They became the unofficial rulers of Tatooine, expanding its cities and bringing organized crime to the planet. For the wrong reasons, Tatooine had found its way onto the glaactic charts.
