The Galactic Senate was the heart of the
Republic, as it was here that all the major
issues were debated and resolved...at least
in theory. The Senate was, in reality, full of
greedy, squabbling, corrupt delegates with
no interest in the impact their descisions
would have on the Republic.
Situated in the center of the Senatorial
district on Coruscant, the Senate hall could
be reached via a grand courtyard lined with
abstract statues depicting the Republic's
founders in the Core Worlds. Within were
hundreds of offices and rooms for the senators, representatives and aides who would be debating in the Senate Rotunda. The interior was hued in lavendar, the only colour not associated with war or anger in any of the represented cultures. A kilometer of offices stood behind each Senate platform, all of which were customized to suit the species using them.
A public corridor ran around the Senate Rotunda, and was filled with lobbyists and advisors. A private corridor was situated much nearer to the Rotunda, used by the Senate Guards to reach platforms in the Rotunda if trouble broke out. This corridor was also used by the Senators and represenatives themselves, as well as VIP's and distinguished figures such as royalty or Jedi Knights.
The Galactic Senate stood for thousands of generations, and had been one of the founding points of the Galactic Constitution that established the Republic. When Chancellor Palpatine became Emperor Palpatine, the Senate remained intact, though it was known then as the Imperial Senate. He finally disbanded it shortly before the destruction of the Death Star, and the Senate hall was swallowed up by larger Imperial buildings. The New Republic eventually took Coruscant, and though the Senate sustained damage during the battles to establish control, it was later used again as the foundation for the Grand Convocation Chamber. When the Yuuzhan Vong took Coruscant, the Senate hall still remained standing, though it became the Well of the World Brain. It was in the Senate hall that Jacen Solo altered the World Brain to slow the Vong-forming of Coruscant. |
