From ancient, war-like tribes to galactic empires,
republics and rebellions, Coruscant had been the seat
of government in the galaxy for a thousand generations.

It was believed that human life originated on
Coruscantand spread frm there across the galaxy.
However, some two hundred thousand years before the
dawn of humans, Coruscant became an alien
battleground as the prehistoric Taungs and the
Battalions of Zhell fought for the beautiful planet. One
hundred thousand years on, and all of the planet's
natural landscape had been covered by sprawling city -
save for its tallest mountain, which became enshrined
within Monument Plaza. The urbanization of Coruscant was so much that the lower levels of the planet did not see the sun again.

Millennia later, the Galactic Republic was formed on Coruscant. The founders used Coruscant as the capital of the Republic as it was located at galactic center - co-ordinates 0,0,0 - and thus Galactic Center became Coruscant's nickname. As the years passed, Coruscant and the Republic grew, but so did corruption, spreading like a plague through Coruscant's maze of buildings. Finally, a new government took Coruscant: the Empire. Emperor Palpatine renamed it Imperial Center, and had massive Imperial palaces and statues built all over the planet. Distinctive structures of the Republic, such as the Jedi Temple and the Galactic Senate, were either destroyed or eclipsed by the new palaces. The largest of these was Palpatine's own Imperial Palace, which became the biggest structure on the planet.

When the Rebel Alliance finally took Coruscant in a daring invasion led by Rogue Squadron, the Empire was wiped from the planet, leaving the New Republic to grow in its place. Yet the New would echo the Old, as corruption spread through the government. When an extra-galactic invasion force was reported on the Outer Rim, Chief of State Borsk Fey'lya dismissed it. His greed and short-sightedness proved to be the New Republic's downfall...as well as Coruscant's. The Yuuzhan Vong invaders battled for Coruscant, recognising it still as the seat of power, but when they secured Galactic Center, they were not inclined to keep the abominable urban sprawl across the planet. After bombarding the planet from orbit, the Yuuzhan Vong 'Vongformed' Coruscant: millennia-old buildings were erroded and destroyed as the Vong grew a massive jungle over the planet. Though the fall of Coruscant - where the first glimmers of civilization began - symbolized the fall of the galaxy to darkness, Coruscant was actually being reborn. It was once again the beautiful planet which the ancients had fought over millennia past.
