A true wonder of the galaxy, the entire planet of Coruscant was packed with towering skyscrapers, huge spaceports and magnificant buildings and offices of all shapes and sizes. While Coruscant would seem like a dream planet to many, the reality was a stark contrast. Living in the upper echelons of Galactic Center was easy going; beautiful apartments adorned with all manner of technological advancements, and vistas across the city to die for. However, only the very privileged - or the very rich - could afford such luxurious homes. Were you to travel further down into Coruscant's many sub-levels, you would find yourself in a very different world. Seedy nightclubs and grimy diners frequented the dark lower levels, as did every type of smuggler, pirate and vagabond you could possibly imagine. And any who wished to travel even further down...weren't expect to travel back up again. Coruscant's complete and utter urbanization was the result of tens of thousands of years of industrial and cultural development. Coruscant relied solely on imports, yet without Coruscant, democracy in the galaxy would not exist. The planet was the capital of the galaxy and every major government which ruled it. It was said that if you ruled Coruscant, you ruled the galaxy. The planet's surface was not just buried beneath endless skyscrapers and apartments: huge buildings were errected to control the various machines on the planet. Entire planetary networks were set up to control air traffic through the labyrinthine skylanes of Coruscant, to recieve and send massive streams of data that circulated the planet every second, and various other functions to keep the planet going. Huge orbital mirrors were created to ensure Coruscant had enough light and heat, while vast reservoirs of water from the planet's bodies of water - since lost under layers of construction - ensured Coruscant had enough water. |
Coruscant appeared in early drafts of Return of the Jedi, but was called Had Abbadon. Timothy Zahn brought the planet to life in Heir to the Empire, naming it Coruscant. George Lucas kept the name, using it for his later films |
