Designer Doug Chiang notes that the aesthetic approach was to exemplify the droid both as a machine and as a weapon, incorporating knife-like surfaces |
After the failiure of the battle droids during the Battle of Naboo, the design was revised and modified to create the powerful, deadly, super battle droid. The main advances made with the super battle droid could be seen instantly. It had a sturdier frame, toughened armour and a built- in arm blaster. The droids also featured independant droid brains, meaning they did not have to rely on a Central Control Computer for commands. However, their programming was hardly superior to that of the battle droid, in an attempt to cut down on the expense of their production. They did possess some additions, and were able to race into battle, fearlessly and tirelessly until their enemy was nothing but a smoldering hulk. Many of the advances were merely taken from the droideka or the next generation of independant B-1 battle droids, however. The super battle droids were created by the Techno Union on various worlds including Geonosis. When the Union joined Count Dooku's Confederacy of Independant Systems, the super battle droids were added to the Seperatist arsenal that already boasted the Trade Federation's battle and destroyer droids as well as the larger droids of the commerce guilds. Despite the improvements of the super battle droids, they still had to rely on large numbers to defeat the Jedi task force which infiltrated Geonosis. Though they beat the Jedi back eventually, the Army of the Republic settled the odds in the Republic's favour. The super battle droids were no match for the independant, intelligent clonetroopers, and were pushed back quickly during the ensuing battle. Super battle droids were later used in the Clone Wars, but were defeated just prior to the formation of the Galactic Empire. Some of the droids were assigned as guards for the leaders of the Confederacy: Count Dooku was sometimes seen with a group of super battle droids for added protection. |
