Though the battle droids were ordered by a Central Control Computer, the Trade Federation installed ranks and chains of command for their automaton soldiers. Each variant had specialized equipment and colour-coded markings to designate each group.
Command officer battle droids were responsible for leading squads of infantry droids. They were actually relay points for the signals of a Droid Control Ship, and could also be given verbal orders from Neimoidian officers. Their backpacks were fitted with communications gear enabling them to access priority channels to the central computer. If a commander droid was destroyed in battle, a lower-ranking battle droid would take its place and relay orders. Command droids were designated by yellow markings on their head and torso.

Pilot droids featured blue markings, and could fly any Trade Federation vessel from the one-droid STAP to the massive battleships in orbit. During an infantry assault, the pilot droids would control landing craft and Mobile Troop Transports to deploy the Federation's own infantry into battle. As pilot droids drew their power from the craft they were piloting, they rarely needed backpacks. Pilot droids were also used for a number of tasks onboard starships, such as acting as officers if required.

Security droids, identified by red markings, were assigned a number of tasks by the Trade Federation. They could be found escorting prisoners, protecting delegates or defending installations from attack.

There were also a group of advanced battle droids which possessed heightened intelligence and independance. These droids were created after the fiasco at Naboo, and were assigned to guard Raith Sienar for his mission to Zonama Sekot. These were the basis for the droids used eight years later in the Battle of Geonosis and the Clone Wars, which could function independantly of a Central Control Computer.
