After the Battle of Yavin, Wedge stayed with the Rebellion and - along with Luke Skywalker - formed Rogue Squadron. This new fighter squad was created to be a flexible unit, not bound by standard command channels. Though Rogue Squadron was initially dismissed, Luke, Wedge and the squadron preformed well enough to garner a good reputation within the Rebellion. Rogue Squadron was on hand to defend Echo Base from invading Imperial walkers on Hoth, and while the base was eventually overrun, Wedge and his gunner Janson managed to topple one of the AT-AT's. Antilles and the survivors of Rogue Squadron fled Hoth to regroup. During Luke Skywalker's absence, Wedge led Rogue Squadron, fighting for the Alliance at Gall and later Coruscant. Wedge was then appointed to lead Red Squadron, and had another shot at destroying a Death Star. Wedge's role in the Battle of Endor was pivotal, as he helped Lando Calrissian in destroying the main reactor of the second Death Star. Earning joint credit for the massive kill, Wedge landed on the moon of Endor as a hero. The Death Star and the Emperor may have been vanquished, but there were still many challenges left for Wedge. Because of his history and his skill as a pilot, Wedge became Rogue Leader, heading Rogue Squadron as they battled against the Ssi-Ruuk invaders and the remnants of the Empire. However, Rogue Squadron became more than a mere fighter squadron: Wedge was faced with the task of rebuilding the squadron into an elite, iconic group that could bring about more support for the New Republic. With his new squadron comprised of some of the best pilots in the Alliance - among them ex-CorSec officer Corran Horn and Tycho Celchu, who had battled alongside Wedge on Hoth - Wedge lead numerous missions that were deemed impossible for any fighter squadron...yet his squadron became infamous for making the impossible possible. Wedge was even inserted into Imperial Center to take down Coruscant's shields and allow the Rebels a shot at the heart of the Empire. Once Coruscant was in the hands of the New Republic, Wedge's life was filled with more and more diplomatic issues. Though he still flew with Rogue Squadron, he also formed Wraith Squadron, comprised of spies and saboteurs, who proved instrumental in the victories over Warlord Zsinj. However, Wedge eventually returned to the Rogues, and was present in the Battle of Bilbringi, which saw the death of Grand Admiral Thrawn. Following the defeat of the last Grand Admiral, Wedge Antilles accepted a long-overdue promotion. |
