Luke and Vader's first duel was in Splinter of the Mind's Eye, set a year before The Empire Strikes Back
Though the Death Star was destroyed, the Rebels knew
they were not safe. The Empire wanted revenge, and
was preparing to attack Yavin IV. Luke's role in the
Rebellion was only just beginning.

The day after the Battle of Yavin, Luke decided to
escape the tiring celebrations in the base - as well as
the panic of planning for inevitable evacuation - by taking
his X-wing up into the skies. However, his solitude was
shattered when a lone TIE fighter attacked him. With his
weapons bereft of power, Luke was forced to ram the
enemy ship. Both starfighters crashed into the jungle,
and though the TIE pilot tried to kill him on the ground,
Luke gained the upper hand and allowed him to flee into
the jungle.

Upon returning to the base, Luke found it was not just enemy pilots he had to contend with. The Rebel pilot whose X-wing Luke had used in the battle, named Jal, felt cheated - as he had been too ill to fly on the fateful day - and turned to drink. He was sent to the backwater world of Dubrava, where he blurted out Luke's name and location while drunk one night. This information reached Darth Vader, who realised the pilot responsible for the destruction of the Death Star was his own son. He found Luke on Jazbina, where Luke was left with no choice but to face the Dark Lord after meeting a Rebel cell on the planet. However, Jal attacked the Star Destroyer in orbit, inciting the people below to riot. Vader stalked away from the chaos empty-handed.

However, father and son met again soon after, on the planet Mimban. Both Luke and Vader were searching for the Kaiburr crystal, and engaged in battle in the Temple of Pomojema. Luke managed to cut off Vader's mechanical right arm, and sent him tumbling into a pit. Prior to the confrontation, Luke had attempted to destroy Vader's Super Star Destroyer in construction above Fondor, and though the attack failed, it had made Vader realise how powerful Luke was. Luke had been doing much for the Rebellion during the evacuation of Yavin IV: he co-founded Rogue Squadron with Wedge Antilles, he helped rescue Crix Madine on Corellia, and he even located the site of the Rebels' next base: Hoth. Luke had stumbled upon the ice planet when he crashed his ship there. After the evacuation of Yavin IV, the Rebels began scouting Hoth and setting up a base. Luke helped the Rebels set up Echo Base, and was promoted to the rank of commander. But there were still many dangers ahead...
