PLANE CRASH
Flying an A-4, Major Searle supported the recon team that was surrounded on 26
Jan 1967 in which PFC Steve Albert SRSEN of A/1/3 jumped on a grenade to protect
others. The grenade detonated and he was put in for the Medal of Honor. CG,
3dMarDiv, recommended the MOH and General Walt concurred, but it was denied by
General W.C. Westmoreland, perhaps because the incident occurred just within the
Laotian border.

Diary entry for 22 Jan 68: Gunny Silva of the S-3 shop in the 1/26 COC bunker,
asked that I send the Catholic chaplain to visit him. He showed me a large
quantity of religious items he had with him: a plastic prayer card, a Christmas
card from a Franciscan brother, and the mass for each Sunday.
