Folk Art, as defined by Webster, is the traditional, typically anonymous art of the people that is an expression of community life and is distinguished from academic or self.  A conscious or cosmopolitan expression, or as put more simply, originating among or having to do with the group through succeeding generations.

Long ago, before Christianity, in old-world Czechoslovakia, people were very superstitious.  This was a time when they believed every tree, rock and stream might be a dwelling place of a spirit ready to affect the course of human life for good or evil.  They believed that different implements and elements possessed the power to protect them from these evils.
