STAR TREK IV
THE VOYAGE HOME
1986 ***** 119 mins.
What should you get when you combine science fiction, drama, and comedy? You should get Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home is a magnificent film that truly transcends the boudaries of the Star Trek universe. I laughed heartily when watching this film. I mean, when you get the former crew of the Enterprise in 20th century San Francisco, you can just imagine all the hilarious hijinks that occur. The thing is, though, all of the comedy in this film works, whereas many films would take such a situation and make it goofy and stupid. All of the comedy in this film, and I do say all of it, works wonderfully.
Plus, there is still a great story to it. In the 23rd century, a strange probe sending humpback whale signals drains power from Earth and the Federation space dock. Admiral James T. Kirk and his crew, en route to their destinies on Earth in their stolen Klingon vessel, veer off their course to travel back through time to bring some humpback whales into their time in order to save the world.
The only problem is this: some viewers may be confused about certain parts at the very beginning and the very end, unless they have seen Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan and Star Trek III: The Search for Spock. That does not mean that the viewer can't still thoroughly enjoy this wonderful film that is fully deserving of a complete five star rating.
Rated PG for some language and violence.
