The special effects in Casper were done by ILM (Industrial Light and Magic), and the movie features more than 40 minutes of special effects. Casper is one of the first digital performers in history and features a full range of facial expressions. The pupils in his eyes even adjust to the changing light. The digital work on Casper and the Ghostly Trio took almost two years and resulted in 28 trillion bytes (28,000 gigabytes) of data!

The look of Whipstaff Manor was inspired by the Spanish architect, Antoni Gaudi. With the outside of the building, only the front of the mansion was actually built in the Universal sound stages, the rest was a matte painting.

All of the real Maine footage in the movie was Camden Harbor from Mount Battie in the Camden Hills to the north. The low peninsula off in the distance to the right is Owl Head, which is 12km south of Mout Battie. The land features we see as Dr. Harvey's car enters the town actually don't exist in the real Friendship, Maine. There are no high hills, no bridge at the end of the harbor, and no single island at the entrance. Actually, Friendship is pretty far back from open water.

The lighthouse, however, doesn't seem to exist in either Friendship or Camden. There is also no cliff like one where Whipstaff stood. Most of the scenes were matte paintings, so they can never be found. Casper was mostly filmed in a studio, so the only scene that was actually in Maine was the scene where their car is driving into Friendship.

The scene where Amber nearly hits Kat with her bike was filmed in a lot at Universal Studios. Also, the tree with a ghost tied to it in the same scene was a California Pepper Tree, which grows in Peru and cannot grow in most of North America. Also, the fallen leaves in front of the school and scattered in the streets were fake.

The liscense plate on Dr. Harvey's vehicle reads 782 R4E. It was supposed to be a New Mexico plate, but the state only uses letter for the last three spaces.

The school Kat goes to in Friendship was shown with the name Marshfield Jr. High School.
