Mathematics Philosophy
Creating mathematical proficiency in my students is a vital and integral part of my day as an elementary classroom teacher. In the elementary classroom, development and exploration of numerical concepts and problem solving strategies are the foundation in building mathematical proficiency.

Mathematics instruction will focus on
- multiple solution methods
- stimulating class discussions that focus on comparisons and why a procedure works
- use of drawings and concrete materials so students understand mathematical concepts beyond route memorization
- problem solving activities
- tutoring sessions for those who need extra help and for students ready for advanced study

At the core of every lesson, I will
- hold the highest of expectations for all of my students
- scaffold appropriately to encourage critical thinking skills
- build a community where each student holds the notion that mathematics success comes with effort and determination.
To ensure students develop this disposition, I will
- present math content that students feel they can succeed with reasonable effort

To develop this quality of instruction, I will
- strive to further my own depth of understanding of the mathematics content
- assess the effectiveness and attention my students display toward concepts and lessons on a daily basis
- provide for flexibility in planning to accommodate for student needs and success
