Psychotherapy is the intentional application of psychological techniques for obtaining pre-determined changes, like changes in behaviour, reduction of psychological distress etc. It is the treatment of emotional and /or related bodily problems by psychological means.

Lego S defined the Psychotherapy as a method of treatment based on the development of intimate therapeutic relationship between the patient and therapist for the purpose of exploring and modifying the patient's behaviour in a satisfactory direction.

According to Wolberg, psychotherapy is the treatment by psychological means, of problems of an emotional nature, in which a trained person (therapist) deliberately establishes a professional relationship with the patient to ( i ) remove, modify or retard existing symptoms, (ii) mediate disturbed patterns of behaviour and (iii) promote positive personality growth and development.

Psychotherapy is the development of a trusting relationship, which allows free communication and  leads to understanding, integration and acceptance of self.
