Hawaii Pic-A-Day Gallery - Day 16

Starry Nights - Mauna Kea's position near the equator, it's height above atmospheric disturbances, and it's isolation from city lights make it one of the most prominent locations in the world for astronomical observation. Billions of dollars worth of observatories and scientific research facilities are located near it's summit. This photo was taken from a more moderate altitude of 9,000 feet - not far from the Visitor's Center. The streaking effect on the stars is the result of the earth's rotation during this five minute exposure.
