Hawaii Pic-A-Day Gallery - Day 14
Fire and Brimstone - The smell of sulphur permeates the air as steam clouds billow forth out of Kilauea - a volcanic wonder which has been steadily active for more than a decade. Lava streams daily through underground tubes in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, ultimately emptying into the ocean. Occasionally, pressure builds up culminating in violent volcanic geysers and surface lava flows. Seismic activity and other indicators are used to help predict potential dangers to tourists and residents from the Kilauea and Mauna Loa volcanoes. Over time, the endless flow of lava is building up additional land mass on the big island's southern coast. |
