So, I saw a musical the other day, and it was okay, because I like musicals. It wasn't anything spectacular, but it was good. So, the end rolls around, and the last song comes to an end, and everyone starts doing their bows. Suddenly, much to my horror and disgust, before the first row of players has finished their bow, some people in front of me begin to stand! No! What are you doing, you fools? Don't you know that when you stand, that signifies that the performance was extraordinary? Oh, you are aware? Then obviously you are an idiot. Sadly, these thoughts were not voiced in public... but I thought them, in hopes that those ignorant fools in front of me would get the hint, and take their seats. Sadly, their telepathy skills were not up to snuff, so they remained standing, thus forcing me to stand in order to be able to see the stage. This only furthered my fury, although my only reaction was to stand quietly behind them and clap. After several long minutes of standing through the rest of the bows, and the entire finale, we were finally filing out like cattle. I still can't help but think, even you are going to give a standing ovation to a show that clearly was not deserving of one, at least wait until the finale is over, or until the main characters are bowing, not the people who played "Baltimore citizen #132."
The fact that people see the need to give standing ovations to very bad performances makes me generally very angry. Every, and I do not exaggerate, I mean every live performance, of anything I have ever been to has recieved a standing ovation. There were very few of them, if any, that actually deserved it. I was under the impression that one gives a standing ovation when something is actually above the normal... not every performance is THAT good! It's just as simple as that!
