MADGAON : The most
prominent station on the KR and the Gateway to Goa. It is a juction
with the SCR line coming from Londa. Quite a few services operate between
Vasco Da gama and SCR stations like Kulem, Londa and others, which utilise
the KR line between Madgaon and Majorda. (The Madgaon - Majorda stretch
was originally a metre gauge single line under the jurisdiction of the SCR
since Portuguese times. It was handed over to KR which has doubled the
line to handle KR as well as SCR traffic requirements.). 500 metres to the
north, closer to Madgaon town centre and market, lies the old Madgaon MG
station, now only a decaying relic of the past MG Glory.

BALLI : The first station
beyond Madgaon on the
KR from Mumbai. Here we cross the 3 unit DHMU KAK2 Karwar - Kudal -
Ratnagiri DMU Passenger. The DMU
service now runs as the Karwar - Madgaon - Karwar Passenger.

BHATKAL:

KANKANADI: The station
5 km from Mangalore which has become an important halt for Kerala bound
trains which do not proceed to Mangalore. The station is a junction for
the Mangalore - Hassan line which is now under conversion from MG to BG.
This station was rebuilt to be a huge crossing and junction, with large
number of lines and three platforms. Moving away from Mangalore, the line
on the left moves to the Konkan, Panambur Goods Siding & the
Mangalore Refineries. The line to the right is the line to Hassan.
This picture was taken while
leaving the station (pulling out of platform 1) towards Mangalore on 29th Nov 98 from
the 2619 dn LTT - MAQ Matsyagandha Express. |

MANGALORE: The most
important city of Coastal Karnataka, this is a terminus from the old
Madras - Mangalore line. It is a dead end in the heart of Mangalore city
which is why it is not a halt for trains coming from KR towards Kerala.
the station has at present three functional platforms and maintenance
yards. It also has the KRIST - Konkan Railway Institute for Staff
Training. A lot of trains running down the west coast to Kerala, Tamil
Nadu etc originate here. It was a major changeover from the BG to MG also.
The Station building (along PF1) is a quaint structure from British
times.
The picture is taken from the
road on a hillock outside the station providing a panoramic view of
Mangalore Station Layout. The engine seen is an Erode WDM2. There are
numerous crossings to allow the engine to change tracks at the dead
end ... a very interesting arrangement. Picture Date - 29th Nov 1998
