Pulau Sibu Tengah (16/02/99 - 18/02/99)
It was during the Lunar New Year period that we booked a 3 day 2 night trip to this island, located off the East Coast of Mersing, Johor. We stayed in the newly open Sibu Island Resort. As it was holiday season, it was packed to full capacity. It was also a hard time at the Woodlands causeway. It is always crowded at the causeway. Although much has been done by both sides to ease the causeway jam, I hope, things get better in the future. What about a ferry or train to carry passengers to and return at Woodlands causeway ?
We were required to wait at Newton Hawker Centre carpark to wait for our transport that would take us to Tanjung Leman Ferry Terminal. Though the ferry schedule was at 11am, we must be at the carpark by 6.30am ! I just detest arm-chair travel.. Sometimes, you just have no choice...
A small van took us about 2 hours to reach Tanjung Leman. On the way, we stopped at a food cum fruit stall, atop a small hill. This place sold very good fried chicken(so called the kampung chicken). On the way home, I bought a jackfruit at RM8.00. It was worth it. The fresh was sweet and fresh. Ever since, if I happen to be there, I will buy jackfruit home.
From Tanjung Leman Ferry Terminal to Sibu island took about half an hour. I noticed the water was quite brown at the terminal. I was a little disappointed. Luckily, the water around Sibu was clean. Upon arrival to the Sibu Island Resort, we were being welcome by a choir of 3 singers. Quite refreshing. As it was so packed, we needed to wait for a while for the rooms to be cleaned.
This is a 20 acre resort, neatly tucked among the lush tropical vegetation. I, especially liked the chalets which were located all over the hills. There was a balcony at each chalet for visitor to relax and, perhaps like me, had a cup of tea. There was also a mini zoo, a delight for the children.
Perhaps it was so crowded that the service tended to slack a little. One incident was during the barbeque dinner. In order to meet the demand of the huge crowd, food was not done properly and inadequate. I found the chicken wing was not cooked. After bringing to the chef, instead of being cooked, it was burnt ! A quick job, I suppose. Not a very good one, isn't it ?
Credit should be given to the resort for organising a evening event for the Chinese visitors to celebrate the Lunar New Year. Though it was a small scale, it was fun and harmonious occasion for not only the Chinese but all races. I really appreciated it.
Despite the crowd, with the white sandy beach and swaying coconut trees, it was a soothing way to relax oneself. Though the water was not crystal clear, it was good enough to have a cool swim and that beautiful tan.
