Cameron Highlands (13/10/2000 - 16/10/2000)
After more than ten years of my last visit, I decided to visit Cameron Highlands again. About 5000 feet above sea level, this beautiful hill resort was discovered by William Cameron, a government surveyor, in 1885.
This time round, I came with my wife and daughter. We departed from JB in the night. It was a cosy and comfortable super VIP coach. As in overnight ride, it was very cold in the coach. Reaching Cameron in the wee hours of the morning, it was drizzling. Going round and round the hills to reach the top was not helping to our already tired and cold bodies.
We stayed at Equatorial Hillresort at Kea Farm, Brinchang. The air was cool and fresh. It was a wonderful feeling. We went to have our breakfast and later to our room to have a good rest. I noticed there was no air-con in the room. Who needs air-conditioning ? The natural cool and fresh air was better.. From the hotel room, the view was beautiful with the vast acres of tea plantation taking the background scenery.
In the afternoon, we joined the local tour that brought us to places of interest in Cameron. One particular place that impressed me was the Rose Centre. As the name implies, this is the place where there are may varieties of plants and flowers are grown. I saw a sunflower that was bigger than my head. It was huge. With such natural atomsphere and great weather, the plants are healthy and beautiful here.
Another place that I liked very much was the Boh tea plantation that we were brought. It was not a very high-tech place. What impressed me was the little cafe and the surrounding for the guests to have their cups of tea. It was a beautiful ambience. Steaming hot tea in the cool and quiet environment, that was it..
I noticed that there were lots of projects going on. Trees were cut. Roads were being built and so on... One taxi driver I talked to was lamenting that it was no more cold in Cameron. When we were in the town of Brinchang one afternoon, I actually felt hot. There would be some truth in what the taxi driver said.
What you should not miss while in Cameron is to try the steamboat. There are many eatries selling steamboat in Brinchang Town. We took a taxi from our hotel to the town to try the steamboat. It was enjoyable dinner. Steamboat comes with a pot of boiling soup. Raw seafood like prawn, fish, squid and meat plus vegetables are served. You put them in the pot and cook it. I remember one incident a Fenchman asking me how to eat steamboat.
