Eden Garden Hotel, Johor Bahru(26/12/2000 to 27/12/2000)

I have always enjoyed short breaks with my family in Malaysia, especially Johor Bahru(JB).  It is very near to my home.  Another factor is the cost.  I probably will not pay over $200 to stay a night in five star hotel in Singapore.  However, with the attractive exchange rate to our benefit, I am comfortably able to afford a RM200 five star room in JB.  It is with that, many Singaporeans are flocking to JB to shop, dine and and play.

Taking advantage of a public holiday, we booked a 2D 1N package at Eden Garden Hotel, JB.  If you are standing at Woodlands facing JB, you can actually see the majestic hotel across the causeway.   It is situated at the Zon centre, a haven for drinkers and smokers.  Fortunate or unfortunate, I am not a drinker or a smoker.  You can also spend some time shopping here, though, I do not fancy it.

After crossing the Johor customs, board a taxi which will take about 10 to 15 minutes to Eden Garden Hotel.  We paid RM5 for the fare.  However, when we returned, the taxi driver charged us RM4.

To my disappointment, my expectation of the five star Eden Garden Hotel was a little too high. The frontoffice staff was a bit brusque.  What a lousy start !    The design of the rooms where they face each other - with the lounge which is at the ground floor - is a little to appreciate of.  Why ?  When the band starts playing which can be quite loud at times(no complaint with that), you just cannot avoid the noise !   Nevertheless, it is quite a nice hotel with a few floors of shopping in the same building.  Another attractive part is the nearby hawker food stalls.   Come night, there will be a few hundreds tables laid on the open-air carpark near the sea.  I have not seen such a vast display of tables in my life.   Believe me, these tables are totally filled with diners in the wee hours of the night.  Local food like roti chenai, satay, tek tarak and the barberque seafood are available. If you like Chinese food, nearby within walking distance, are some coffee shops and cook stalls.  We tried one of these stalls.  Price was reasonable but food wasn't delectable.

There is a floating restaurant cum pub nearby.  It is actually a barge being converted to a beautiful lighted floating palace.  It is attractive sight in the night with its multi-coloured bulbs. I did not patronise this restaurant.  I wonder how is the food ?
