Exactly half a year since the devastation felt throughout the world. One of the greatest natural disasters that brought the people of the planet together in aid and for common hope… and now, 6 months later…where is the focus of the world. War still apparent in the Middle East. Jacko is still a wacko, but not going to jail. Tom and Katie are still in a movieland called their personal lives, and people are back to doing what they do everyday and just focused on their little bubble and what the news and media deems popular.
For everyone who donated to help out with the Tsunami Relief in Southeast Asia, it was good to know that so many people cared about people they did not ever meet or know about. Strange how the world cried yet the world never got to know the faces of the people they were helping. Maybe this gave a little distance away from the devastation and kept thinks at arms length from our personal lives. We do not know what really is going on over there. I’d be surprised if people even realized that there that still people missing and unidentified to date. The homeless still have no clean water or food and the streets are still the houses of many of thousands of people.
The millions of aid money that has been pumped into the region still sit nice and comfy in trust accounts while the bureaucrats and politicians decide what to do with all this aid. The people are in need. But it seems without the proper supervision and leadership, the rebuilding process is going to be a painful one to endure for the ones who really need it.
All the aid and support was a true testament to the generosity of the human spirit. But without true media representation of what is going on, our perception of the crisis has focused away to much more trivial things. The resorts are rebuilt. The foreigners were found and peace was given to their families. Songs were written and travel resumed. How would things be different if starving children of Indonesia was still top news? How would we help to speed up the aid process?
Our
emotions are triggered by what we see and feel. And without knowing the truth
of the world around us, we are helpless in our control and the ones who control
us.
