Red Sorgum is another of Zhang Yimou's glimpses into rural chinese life. It is told in retrospective by a man relating the story of his grandparents and father. It is set at the time of the Japanese invasion of China. What could have been a heavy-handed history/ideology lesson under a lesser director is an emotionally precise and moving film under Zhang Yimou.
