
Raise the Red Lantern follows the life of a young girl, Songlian, into the household of a wealthy man. She was a university student, but, due to family misfortune, left the university to become the fourth wife of a rich and powerful man. The film examines the politics among the wives of the household, and asks what the price of self-determination really is.
