Researching Slavery
Hello! This part of the website is dedicated to helping you learn how to research our topic, Modern Slavery.
First, you need to decide what area of Modern Slavery you want to research. Some areas that I suggest are:
- Child slavery
- Sweatshops
- Companies that use sweatshops
- The morals of companies that use sweatshops, or just the question, "Why?"
- How the workers are treated
These are just a few of the topics, but I have found them to be the most interesting, and easiest to research.
How do I research?
After you have chosen a topic, use either a search engine, or the resources in the learning center, to find information about your topic. If you do use a search engine, I suggest using Google or Alta Vista. Some keywords that you might want to use are:
- Sweatshops
- Modern Slavery
- Companies AND Sweatshops
You can substitute the name of a company (like Nike) for the word "Companies"
What keywords should I avoid when searching?
I have discovered that the keyword slavery alone is bad to use, it will give you information about slavery in the 1800s.
Another keyword that I REALLY suggest you avoid, especially if you are looking for pictures, is forced labor. I would rather not explain my reasoning for avoiding it.
One last thing, if you are interested in researching slavery and sweatshops in the United States then you may want to start history of sweatshops in the United States website, it starts at the 1820 and works up to today. You can find it at:
Finally, enjoy, and good luck researching.
