History: The Knitting Illini club was the brainchild of Christopher Moy and founded in Spring '02. Being a senior at the time, he was not sure if starting a club so late would be a good idea, but eventually decided to bite the bullet. He had the vision, he had the application, now all he needed was someone to act as treasurer... The Daily Illini ran an article about starting up new student organizations which featured Chris and his idea for a knitting club. A few days after that story ran he got an email from a certain Emily Watson saying how she had read the article and also wanted to start a knitting club. Excellent! All of the pieces were in place and the club was ready to go. They got off to a slow start, especially without the use of quad day (or ballroom day). That first year only saw about 10 members and only about 6 showed up on a regular basis. Then Chris graduated, leaving the club to Emily Watson. The club laid low for the summer but started up again in the fall with Emily as President. The Fall '03 initial turnout was large, but numbers began to dwindle. By mid semester, about 5 to 6 hard-core knitters attended weekly meetings at the Green Street Coffee House. With Ariel as the president, we saw many new faces at the weekly meetings and we finished KI's first charity project! Now Candice is president and we expect great things again this year!
Purpose: The Knitting Illini is a registered student organization providing a social environment to teach and practice the art of knitting. KI is an easygoing social group that meets weekly for the pure love of knitting!
Who may join: Any UIUC student or alum interested in knitting is welcome (from beginner to advanced)! If you're a new knitter, we will teach you the basics and provide extra needles and yarn that you can practice with at the meetings. More advanced knitters should bring their own projects to work on.
