In Praise of Knights

Virtues
Knights
The knight was the best of the best. To be chosen as a knight, one had to have the best qualities. Their virtues were great, in that they were honored for the deeds they did and the goodness they represented.

But lest one believe that a knights life be full of praise and adoration, in truth, it was far from the most pleasant of experiences. He would often have to go into battle without much hope of surviving, unless he would dishonor himself, his home, and his king. They also had a struggle with the power granted them; each knight had to control and maintain himself so that he could maintain his honor. Not only that, but they had to serve and protect their lord, no matter what. Otherwise, surely he would be beheaded.

Also, the knights life, in addition to bloody and honor-bound, had to be pure. When he is to be ordained, the knight-to-be must go through a purifying ritual in order to get him to his peak. If the special procedure is not followed, the knight is not considered to be a true knight. The knight also had special codes to follow in order to maintain his honor and purity. These codes, often referred to as The Code of Chivalry, were strict rules the knight had to follow that made him act in the proper way of a knight, for if he did not, he would be de-knighted and most likely killed.

In summation, the knight's life was not as simple and enviable as most would be led to believe. For while the life did have its advantages, it was mostly rough, tedious, and ultimately one of servitude.
