Operations from the Turks and Caicos Islands
I have been operating from the Turks and Caicos Islands (VP5) for more than ten years. I started going to Providenciales when it was almost unknown and stayed in a motel and set up our own equipment. In the early 90's we began using Jody Millspaugh's (VP5JM) "Hamlet" which has been an excellent operating spot near the beach. The Hamlet has a variety of first-class antennas and Jody is an excellent hostess. Providenciales is about 600 miles south of Miami (see map 1) and 90 miles north of Haiti and the Dominican Republic. Providenciales (Provo, for short) is one of the westernmost islands (see map 2) inhabited by about 3000 natives and 3000 expatriates from many countries. Recently it has been being developed as a vacation resort, but it is still relatively quiet and sparsely developed. The island is about 20 miles long and 1 mile wide with lovely beaches, great snorkeling and fishing. It also has one great golf course. Its IOTA ID is NA-002. It is easily reached my commercial airlines from Miami or Atlanta. FOR QSL INFORMATION

Most of my trips to Provo have been with my old buddy Harry (KB4IRS). Harry and I have been ham buddies since 1961 and we use the yearly trip to Provo to keep in touch. Harry is a CW guy and I like phone so we put the island on the air in both modes quite a bit when we are there. Harry is on the left in this photo.
This is a photo of the "Hamlet" owned by VP5JM. It is set on a hillside above the beautiful Caribean. The Mosley Pro 67 and the 80 meter rotatable dipole can be clearly seen and are just two of many antennas.
Even though there are a few "native hams" in VP5-land it still is pretty rare to Europeans and Asian amateurs and so we are often on the end of large pile-ups. One week of operations often yields 3-5,000 QSO and we are always pleased at how many are a first contact with that country.
I will be there January 14-21, 2003 and hope many of you who work us will enjoy seeing where we are and what we look like. Drop me an email and say HI.
