Reporting Intern

  • Write one story per week for a metropolitan daily newspaper that serves cities including Tempe, Mesa, Scottsdale, Gilbert and Chandler.

Web Devil Editor
  • (Winter & Spring 2005) Manage the online edition of The State Press, including transfer of print edition news as well as creation of original content products. Also serve as de facto convergence coordinator for ASU Student Media.

Campus/Administration Reporter
  • (Fall 2004) Reported campus and administration issues for an award-winning college newspaper with a circulation of 20,000 readers, spanning four campuses scattered throughout the metropolitan Phoenix area.

Content/Assistant Editor
  • (Spring 2003 - Winter 2004) Helped to manage team of freelance writers for site. Evaluated and prioritized story ideas, and assisted in writing and editing content online and sometimes for the newspaper. Hand-coded HTML inside stories for online viewing.

Capital Scholar • Press Intern

  • Participated in national-scale information and action campaigns for issues including public broadcasting support, FCC media consolidation policies, an ethics complaint filed by Rep. Chris Bell against House Majority Whip Tom DeLay, the Bush administration's handling about the Iraq war, electronic voting paper trails and a "Get Out the Vote" program, Vote for America. Travelled to the D.C. area through the Capital Scholars program, along with a number of other interns working in diverse places including Hill offices, lobbying firms and non-profit organizations. Attended weekly meetings and travelled as far as Manhattan and Baltimore to listen to dozens of speakers discuss public policy work inside and outside the Beltway.

Spring 2004 • City of Chandler • Chandler, Arizona
Web and Public Relations Intern

  • Wrote text for news releases and award applications. Designed Web pages for the City's internet and intranet sites. Engaged in content analysis and the design of a National Public Works Week exhibit on display in the city's libraries for several weeks. Participated in planning and implementation of interactive GIS map system to display city facilities online for citizens.

Light Rail in the West

  • Currently Examining the development of commuter rail in the United States and relating this history to the development of new light rail projects in the Phoenix metropolitan area and other western urban communities. Such cities face unique challenges including car-dependent cultures and sprawled-out borders, and this paper will attempt to examine ut how commuter rail will fit into the region.

Spring 2004 • Jim Murray Memorial Foundation
Memorial Scholarship

  • Received an award for writing an essay discussing the ethical obligations of journalists investigating academic fraud allegations in a collegiate athletics program. Submitted evidence of journalism experience and community involvement. Only one student per college or university could be submitted to the selection committee, and only a few students across the country received the award.

Fall 2003 • Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication • Tempe, Arizona
Third Degree on the First Amendment

  • Worked on a team Web site project for JMC 425: Online Media course that will soon be ported onto the Cronkite School's redesigned Web site. Designed two pages for the project and conducted humorous "Jaywalking"-style interviews on Mill Avenue to gauge public knowledge and opinion on First Amendment issues such as free speech and press.
