What?
More neon?
The Big Apple
moves West
There are many affronts
to urban society in the West. Let me count the ways....
One
of the biggest symbolic affronts to this charm of urban beauty and blight
is the Big Apple restaurant.
It stands as a garish, Disneyland-like portrait of cleanliness in an area
that is otherwise so ugly it’s gorgeous.

A
covered wagon and cute diorama complete with robotic cowboys make it the
most elaborate of all the Big Apple restaurants in the Phoenix metropolitan
area. The neon sign on the door is nostalgic, but highly contrived.
Sometimes beautiful
nostalgia is more hideous than the natural flaws of the real thing.
