John Deere Garden Tractor Type Codes
By using the numbers off of the serial number plate, one can determine a lot about John Deere garden tractors.  Depending on the year and model, you can even dertermine what the size of the original tires were.  Below is a list of the different models you can click on to see a breakdown of the information that that particular models serial number plate can tell you. 
Note--- Model 110 tractors serial numbered 2,551-40,000 do not give any information on the serial number plate other than the actual serial number of the tractor.  Also, all of this information was taken from the appropriate JD Service Manual and also from Shelley Rowell's book "Identification of the John Deere 100 series lawn & garden tractors".

NOTE---I have discovered some sales bulletins that have allowed me to update information for 1968 and early 1969 model 110, 112, and 140 tractors as of 11-27-02.
