[Spiritual Home page]  [Joseph Home page]
The life of Joseph can be divided into five parts:
This is Part 1. The Family life. Life with the family

In the life of Joseph we see a fore-shadow of the life of Christ.
  • In the family of Abraham
  • Love for the Father
  • Trouble with his brothers
  • The favor with God
  • Sold for silver
  • Suffering for righteousness sake
  • Lifted up to be the King

In the family of Abraham

Genesis 30:22-24
Then God remembered Rachel; he listened to her and opened her womb. She became pregnant and gave birth to a son and said, "God has taken away my disgrace." She named him Joseph, and said, "May the LORD add to me another son."
Starts out as just a number.

Love for the Father

Joseph did not consider his actions in the light of the consequences he would receive from his brothers. He looked only to his father. And in doing so, his father exalted him above his brothers. This caused the brothers to envy him, to mistrust him, to desire to kill him, and eventually sell him for silver.

Joseph had little support from the brothers in that he had only one full brother who was the youngest of the clan of Jacob. All the other sons were half brothers who seem to have hung out together by sub clan where they were full brothers. And where their mothers were either servant or free.

Was Joseph a little tattle tale? Yes. In looking to the interests of his father, Joseph made his father aware he was suffering loss at the hands of the other sons.
Why not let it slide? Should Joseph have minded his own business? After all, his brothers are also Israel's sons.
But the fathers interests are also Joseph's interests.
Genesis 37:2
Joseph, a young man of seventeen, was tending the flocks with his brothers, the sons of Bilhah and the sons of Zilpah, his father's wives, and he brought their father a bad report about them.
John 2:13-18
And the Jews' Passover was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem, And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise. And his disciples remembered that it was written, The zeal of thine house hath eaten me up. Then answered the Jews and said unto him, What sign shewest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?
The leaders recognized the actions of Jesus to be a fulfillment of scripture.
But it did not matter to them. They were self satisfied.
Some age old sayings of pride:
  • Who are you to tell me what to do.
  • You just think you are better than us.
  • What right do you have to (...).
The brothers were no different.

I John 2:15-17
Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world. And the world passes away, and the lust thereof: but he that does the will of God abides for ever
Trouble with his brothers

Without Joseph's mother Rachel and her ranking in the family, the other sons, felt embolden and were now in direct conflict with Joseph and ready for revenge.

The next problem Joseph has with his half brothers is the demonstration of favoritism by his father. Although Joseph did love his father and strived to please him, Jacob does not seem to remember that favoritism within the family causes great harm.
  • There was trouble between his father and mother.
  • There was trouble with his brother.
  • There was trouble between he and his wives.
  • And now there is trouble between the sons.
Genesis 37:3-4
Now Israel loved Joseph more than any of his other sons, because he had been born to him in his old age; and he made a richly ornamented robe for him. When his brothers saw that their father loved him more than any of them, they hated him and could not speak a kind word to him.
Jacob in a sincere act of love, gives his son a gift. In itself it is a great act of love. In the context of family, it is a slap in the face to all the other brothers. The other sons.
Imagine, for instance, Christmas day. Twelve brothers gather around the tree. Only one present is there. Only one son, one brother receives a gift.
An act of love for one child brings emptiness and longing for the others. Would you not think that each son longed for a close relationship with their father.

The words of Esau to Issac:
Genesis 27:36
Haven't you reserved any blessing for me?
Genesis 27:38
Esau said to his father, "Do you have only one blessing, my father? Bless me too, my father!" Then Esau wept aloud.

Where was Jacob during this exchange. Some of us need a large poster pinned to the wall so we can read every morning: CONSIDERATION.
And look out.
Genesis 27:41-42
And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him: and Esau said in his heart, The days of mourning for my father are at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob. And these words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah: and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him, Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.
He certainly knew about it. And yet the threat of exile or death was not enough for Jacob to refrain from allowing the bitter root of favoritism that had grown between he and his brother to now have grown between his sons.

The favor with God
How does anyone gain favor with God? We are told as a matter of first-things.

Genesis 4:3-8
And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his offering: But unto Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell. And the LORD said unto Cain, Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted? and if thou doest not well, sin lieth at the door. And unto thee shall be his desire, and thou shalt rule over him. And Cain talked with Abel his brother: and it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Joseph now tells the future that God had shown him.
Genesis 37:5-8
Joseph had a dream, and when he told it to his brothers, they hated him all the more. He said to them, "Listen to this dream I had: We were binding sheaves of grain out in the field when suddenly my sheaf rose and stood upright, while your sheaves gathered around mine and bowed down to it." His brothers said to him, "Do you intend to reign over us? Will you actually rule us?" And they hated him all the more because of his dream and what he had said.

Genesis 37:9-11
Then he had another dream, and he told it to his brothers. "Listen," he said, "I had another dream, and this time the sun and moon and eleven stars were bowing down to me." When he told his father as well as his brothers, his father rebuked him and said, "What is this dream you had? Will your mother and I and your brothers actually come and bow down to the ground before you?" His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
If we think we hear something from God, do we share it? Or, in fear, do we remain silent.
2 Timothy 4:2
"Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage--with great patience and careful instruction."
Our attitude in speech is key. We may remain silent with what we know or we can risk the consequences and speak what God has told us. This dilemma is something we deal with every day.
Proverbs 15:1
A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.
There are those who receive the message with joy and those who receive with anger and hatred or disinterest.

Some see encouragement to grow and others consider it an attack.

We fear rejection. Our leader dealt with all these.
Isaiah 53:3-4
He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.
Attitude can give us strength and courage. The consideration is between their feelings and their eternal destiny.
Ephesians 4:15
But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
Where there is the saying "Silence is Golden", many of us feel as Job does (sorry about the context).
Job 13:19
Who is he that will plead with me? for now, if I hold my tongue, I shall give up the ghost.
Then what is the balance? If a word comes from God should it be spoken.
There are times when we need to hear from our God.
Psalms 28:1
{ A Psalm of David.} Unto thee will I cry, O LORD my rock; be not silent to me: lest, if thou be silent to me, I become like them that go down into the pit.

A time to open our mouths to glorify God.
Psalms 30:12
To the end that my glory may sing praise to thee, and not be silent. O LORD my God, I will give thanks unto thee for ever.
Psalms 31:17
Let me not be ashamed, O LORD; for I have called upon thee: let the wicked be ashamed, and let them be silent in the grave.
A time for silence and introspection.
Jeremiah 8:14
Why do we sit still? assemble yourselves, and let us enter into the defended cities, and let us be silent there: for the LORD our God hath put us to silence, and given us water of gall to drink, because we have sinned against the LORD.
Isaiah 53:7
He was oppressed, and he was afflicted, yet he opened not his mouth: he is brought as a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is dumb, so he opened not his mouth.

Warning the following is one of the very scary passages in the Bible.
Ezekiel 33:1-11
Again the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, Son of man, speak to the children of thy people, and say unto them, When I bring the sword upon a land, if the people of the land take a man of their coasts, and set him for their watchman: If when he sees the sword come upon the land, he blow the trumpet, and warn the people; Then whosoever hears the sound of the trumpet, and taketh not warning; if the sword come, and take him away, his blood shall be upon his own head. He heard the sound of the trumpet, and took not warning; his blood shall be upon him. But he that taketh warning shall deliver his soul. But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and the people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman's hand. So thou, O son of man, I have set thee a watchman unto the house of Israel; therefore thou shalt hear the word at my mouth, and warn them from me. When I say unto the wicked, O wicked man, thou shalt surely die; if thou do not speak to warn the wicked from his way, that wicked man shall die in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at thine hand. Nevertheless, if thou warn the wicked of his way to turn from it; if he do not turn from his way, he shall die in his iniquity; but thou hast delivered thy soul. Therefore, O thou son of man, speak unto the house of Israel; Thus ye speak, saying, If our transgressions and our sins be upon us, and we pine away in them, how should we then live? Say unto them, As I live, saith the Lord GOD, I have no pleasure in the death of the wicked; but that the wicked turn from his way and live: turn ye, turn ye from your evil ways; for why will ye die, O house of Israel?
How? This is more tricky ground.
Previously we looked at John 2, that "pride of life" passage. There is some hard packed, rocky, and weedy ground out there.
God does not say we are to speak in the condemnation of others for one or two items in a "thou shalt not" list that no one can keep.
All have sinned. We all need a Saviour.
We first of all need to get ourselves in line with the will of God. Then we can look for opportunities in prayer.

Matthew 7:4-8
Or how wilt thou say to thy brother, Let me pull out the speck out of thine eye; and, behold, a beam is in thine own eye? Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the speck out of thy brother's eye. Give not that which is holy unto the dogs, neither cast ye your pearls before swine, lest they trample them under their feet, and turn again and rend you. Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you: For every one that asks receives and he that seeks finds and to him that knocks it shall be opened.

This is the first time I have seen the ask, seek, knock passage in the light of witnessing to others.
The context of the passage demands it.
When in doubt, speak to what Christ has done for you, to you and through you.
What is your testimony?
What is the Bible written in your life?
There are many in this world who do not read the Bible nor are interested.

Now what about Joseph's dreams themselves. With Abraham, God spoke. Now God begins to work through dreams. And no I am still "not" dispensational.

The first dream is about the grain. Later in the life of Joseph, is in charge of the grain for the land.
Why did were there 2 trips. The prophecy could not be fulfilled with only 10 boys but 11. Benjamin needed to be there.
The second dream of the sun and moon and eleven stars may have to do with the blessings of the first born. Jacob, at the end of his life, blesses Joseph with the double portion of the inheritance.
This was done when Jacob adopted Joseph's two sons as his own.
But that is for later.

Genesis 37:13
And Israel said unto Joseph, Do not thy brethren feed the flock in Shechem? come, and I will send thee unto them. And he said to him, Here am I.
Here am I:
Abraham, Issac and Jacob said it. Now Joseph says it.
You will also hear Samuel, David, and Isaiah render these words.
This is an act of submission. How may I serve?

I Samuel 3:4
That the LORD called Samuel: and he answered, Here am I.
Isaiah 6:8
Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.

Sold for silver
Joseph now is sent by his father Jacob to do what seemed to be a small job.
He would not return.
The brothers will now get rid of their brother. They intend to kill him but later defer to selling him into slavery. In doing so, they condemn him to death by the hands of others.
The brothers sell Joseph to the sons of Abraham, Ishmeelites (of Hagar) / Midianites (of Keturah), for twenty pieces of silver. They then sell Joseph to Potiphar, The Captain of the Guard.

Jesus was sent by The Father to his brothers.
Judas sells Jesus to the Sanhedrin, also sons of Abraham, for thirty pieces of silver who then turned Jesus before Pilot.

Genesis 37:28
Then there passed by Midianites merchantmen; and they drew and lifted up Joseph out of the pit, and sold Joseph to the Ishmeelites for twenty pieces of silver: and they brought Joseph into Egypt.

I don't know what the Lord has in mind for me as I travel along life's path way.
But I do know that he will be with me all along the way.
