Objectives:
* The learners will complete Semantic Maps in order to tie together prior knowledge, relate new information to existing schemata, and map existing knowledge about a topic and related concepts.
* The learners will post their Semantic Maps in their Groups' folder in the Germ Team Forum.
*The learners will form a research strategy in order to analyze and evaluate the problem.
* The learners will use the Internet to research the problem concept in order to activate existing schema, start to build a foundation for new knowledge, and develop research skills.
* The learners will identify ways germs are contracted, how they spread, their effects, and how to prevent them from spreading by.
* The learners will reflect and type their reflections in their Journal in the Germ Team Forum.

Main Activity (Group):
* Gather in groups of 2 (already assigned).
* Brainstorm with your group about what you know about the problem terms.
* Create a Semantic Map demonstrating your understanding of the problem terms.
* Post the Semantic Map in the Group folder in the Germ Team Forum.

Extended Learning:
The learners will begin web research of the problem concept in their Groups. This activity is to allow the learners to get engaged in the problem and form an initial research strategy. They will complete Self-Rating Scales that are located under Files in the Germ Team Forum to assist them in compiling their research. The learners will post their Scales in their Group folders in the Germ Team Forum.

Useful Search Engines:
Use the following search engines to assist in your research:
http://www.niaid.nih.gov/factsheets/flu.htm
www.cdc.gov/flu/about/disease.html

www.medcenterone.com/kids/healthinfo/influenza.htm

Suggested Research Areas:
* What is an epidemic? Influenza?
* What causes epidemics? Influenza? How are they spread?
* What are the symptoms of Influenza?
* How do people get Influenza? How is it spread?
* How is Influenza treated?
