| This problem-based learning unit was created by Tina Walker as part of an assignment for EDUC 5309. This unit plan is designed for implementation as a health lesson with fourth grade students whose standards are governed by the TEKS. The students learn about communicable and noncommunicable diseases in 4th grade, which prepares them for this unit of study. Anticipated Problem: How can students, as active members of the school community, contribute to controlling the spread of communicable diseases and illness? Problem Terms:Influenza Epidemic Length of Unit: 2 weeks (10 days) Grouping: Whole group, small group, and individual instruction activities included TEKS: Section 115.6 Health Education, Grade 4. (4.5) Health information.The student knows how to utilize health information. The student is expected to: (b) identify different pathogens and explain how the body protects itself from pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, and fungi; (c) discuss ways in which prevention and transmission of disease are affected by individual behaviors; and (d) distinguish between communicable an noncommuicable diseases. (5.6) Influencing factors. The student recognizes behaviors that prevent disease and speed recovery from illness. The student is expected to: (a) identify similarities in which healthy environments can be promoted in homes, schools, and communities, and (b) explain the importance of a community environmental health plan. Goals: To teach the learners the importance of good hygiene to prevent illnesses as well as teaching them how germs and illnesses spread and how to prevent it. By the end of this unit, learners are expected to know what germs are, how they spread, and how to prevent them from spreading. Materials needed: Computers and computer/copy paper Reference materials Pens/pencils Art supplies such as markers, glue, scissors, etc. Poster board, tag paper (for final projects) |
