| Competency 004 The teacher understands learning processes and factors that impact student learning and demonstrates this knowledge by planning effective, engaging instruction and appropriate assessments. Reflection: In order for teachers to understand learning processes and factors that impact student learning, we must understand how learning happens or occurs. We must also know developmental stages in which students are able to comprehend and understand the concepts that we are teaching. In traditional classrooms, many times teachers are attempting to teach the students too many concepts at one time, which can prevent them from actually conceptualizing the information for either topic. This can lead to being able to recall a list of facts, but not the deep understanding that we want our students to gain. Also, students have a hard time learning for understanding because many of tasks that they are completing in the classroom are not relevant or logical to them. Young children are concrete thinkers, according to Piagetian theory, and teachers must be able to provide lessons and activities geared toward this stage of development. Learning opportunities should be planned where students can take ownership of their learning.
