This property is deep in Cathar castle country. The house
is presided over by the Chateau de Puilaurens. The castles fortifications
were the most advanced of any in the region and the Cathars who took refuge
here only surrendered in 1256 after the fall of Montsegur. For those interested
in history there is a lot to visit locally such as the very pretty flower
decked village of Tautavel, with its Paleolithic museum, and the Gorges
of Galamus, a steep gorge with wonderful stone pools for swimming and
canyoning. The setting has also been used in film making. Enjoy white
water rafting at nearby Axat, or in low season take an easy drive up into
the Pyrenees for a days skiing and return to the comfort of the cosy house
with wood-burning fire. Some of the finest and cleanest beaches in Europe
(Argeles and Canet Plage) are less than an hours drive to the East. The
proximity of the mountains, spectacular gorges, Spanish border, Andorra
and Perpignan ensure fascinating excursions.
