CHOBITS | The story centers on the life of Hideki Motosuwa, a repeat student ("ronin") attempting to get into university by studying at the Seki cram school in Tokyo. An honest and unassuming teenager raised on a farm, he has little experience with women, though his imagination and libido are both quite active. Besides a girlfriend, the other thing he dreams of having is a Persocom. A Persocom is an android used as a personal computer. Hideki discovers that Persocoms are commonplace in the city, as they can assist their owners in many ways, but Persocoms are extremely expensive and Hideki has no money, so he figures the only way he'll ever have one is if he were to find one lying on the curb. No sooner has he thought this than it happens: on his way home from the grocery store one evening, he stumbles across a Persocom in the form of a nude beautiful young girl with long blonde hair, wrapped in white cloth, lying against a pile of trash bags. He first thinks this to be a murder but, realizing she was a Persocom, he carries her home. At first, he has trouble turning her on and looks for a switch. He looks all over her body, and finally finds it between her legs. When he presses it, she turns on, and instantly regards Hideki with adoration. When he questions her, the only word she seems capable of saying is "chi", and thus he names her Chi. But little does Hideki knows that there is something behind this little "chi". |

DEATH NOTE | Light Yagami is a brilliant, but bored, high school student who resents the crime and corruption in the world. His life undergoes a drastic change when he discovers a mysterious notebook, known as the "Death Note", lying on the ground in the year 2003. The Death Note's instructions claim that, if a human's name is written within it, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the Death Note's authenticity, believing it is just a prank. However, after experimenting with it and killing two criminals, Light is forced to admit that the Death Note is real. After meeting with the true owner of the Death Note, a Shinigami named Ryuk, Light seeks to become "the God of the new world" by passing his judgement on criminals. Soon, the number of inexplicable deaths of reported criminals catches the attention of the International Police Organization and a mysterious detective known only as "L". L quickly learns that the serial killer, dubbed by the public as "Kira"(derived from the Japanese pronunciation of the English word "Killer"), is located in Japan. L also concludes that Kira can kill people without laying a finger on them. Light realizes that L will be his greatest nemesis, and a race to prove mental superiority between the two begins. |

Shakugan no Shana | Yuji Sakai, a high school student, expected his very normal life to last forever. However, this expectation is quickly shattered one day while on his way home. The world suddenly freezes in time, leaving Yuji to watch in horror as blue flames engulf the people around him. Soon a monster resembling a large doll appears and begins sucking the flames into its mouth, until it notices Yuji. Surprised with Yuji's insusceptibility to the time-stop, it jumps with glee. Just as the monster prepares to consume Yuji, a sword-wielding girl in black attire with flaming red eyes and hair that burns like embers appears, swiftly and confidently destroys the monster, before noticing Yuji moving freely. The girl calls herself a "Flame Haze" who hunts the "Denizens of the Crimson Realm" and the "Rinne" they send to do their bidding. When Yuji notices a blue flame in his chest, the Flame Haze tells him that the "real" Yuji died some time ago, and that he is a "Torch", a temporary replacement for erased humans. Torches take on the forms of those erased persons, but after a period of time, they will vanish from existence and the memories of the living. Unfazed by his apparent death, Yuji befriends the strange girl and names her "Shana" after her sword. Expecting Yuji to slowly fade away like all other Torches do, Shana is surprised to find that Yuji is not a normal Torch, but instead a special kind called a "Mystes": he has a treasure inside him, known as a "Hougu", a device possessing special abilities of sorts, and an extremely powerful and valuable one at that. Shana resolves to protect Yuji from the Denizens , who would use the Treasure to disrupt the balance of the world, and Yuji decides to join Shana in her fight. |

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya follows the high school life of Haruhi Suzumiya and those who are caught up in her antics. While Haruhi is the central character to the plot, the story is told from the point of view of Kyon, one of Haruhi's classmates. Kyon is a first year in high school who recently departed with his fantasies of espers, time travelers, and aliens behind him along with middle school. When he chooses to speak to one eccentric girl by the name of Haruhi Suzumiya on the first day of high school, he unwittingly sets off a chain of events. In turn, he is dragged into seemingly unreal situations, which required some self-convincing of being a part of. This all turns his world nearly upside down as he is drawn further into a world eerily like the fantasies he had just managed to outgrow, with Haruhi Suzumiya at the center of it all. Searching for a group that interests her, Haruhi joins and quits every club in school finding only dissatisfaction. Kyon makes a snide remark about her actions and accidentally provides Haruhi the inspiration to create a club of her own. To help start the club, Haruhi forcefully drafts Kyon, who only stays in the club to protect (or try to protect) other helpless victims of Haruhi's "voluntary arrests". Then as the story progresses however, Kyon finds that each of these supposedly "helpless victims" has a specific reason to be there. |
