Dad's
Belgian Waffle Supper
Each January, the After Five Club brings Dad's Belgian Waffles to the
Spencer
High School Cafeteria for an all you can eat Waffle Supper. The
event is
scheduled in conjunction with a Spencer Girl/Boy Basketball game.
Serving
takes place from 5:00 to 7:30pm. Proceeds from the event go Upper
Des
Moines Early Head Start and other childrens charities. 350 to 400
attend
the tasty supper each year.
Rose
Sale
Spring and many smiles are popping up each spring as the After Five
members
sell roses by the dozen with the assistance of Dels Garden
Center. Around
Easter each year members seek out those looking to spread a little
cheer with
the purchase of a dozen red roses for around $15. Then on a
designated
Friday each member delivers the roses to those who have ordered for
themselves
our someone special. The sale continues to grow each year with
nearly 400
dozen sold annually.
Adopt
a Flower Bed
The city of Spencer Parks and Recreation Department came up with a way
for
service clubs in town to help in beautification through their
Adopt-a-Flower
Bed initiative. Clubs, Businesses and Individuals adopt a flower
bed
located in the median of Grand Avenue, just north of downtown.
The
planning and planting is headed up each year by club member Gary Holck
with the
bed located in front of Hy-Vee. Through the summer months members
weed,
feed and water and colorful display.
Clay
County Fair
The annual Clay County Fair is known far and wide as the Greatest
County Fair
in the World. The annual extravaganza was actually the world's
largest
county fair at one time until fairs in California and Pennsylvania
brought in
more attendance. The nine day fair is held the week after Labor
Day. The After Five Club operates a food stand located inside the
historic main gate of the fairgrounds. Specialty of the house is
our
Brats with Kraut with hundreds served each year. Another
specialty
especially on those warmer days are our homemade milk shakes with hand
scooped
ice cream and your choice of flavors.
