CHRISTMAS DINNER

by Leni

Lorelai stopped the car and stared at the grand house in front of her. It was the Gilmore’s Christmas celebration. Again. Lorelai hated it. But every year she came here. If only for her little daughter who... oh shit.

“Rory!”

The eight-year-old smiled at her mother, unaware that the smooth ponytail Lorelai had struggled to make was hopelessly tangled.

“Oh sweetheart,” Lorelai whined, desperately looking for a brush in her purse. Keys... Gum... Rory’s storybook... No, no brush. “I’m not letting you open that window. Ever. I don’t care if it was your first ride in the shotgun seat.”

Rory just stared.

With her fingers Lorelai pulled her daughter’s hair into some semblance of order, sighing in relief when the result was passable.

---

Finally at the door Rory grinned excitedly, went to her tiptoes and rang the bell. Several times.

“Who on earth...?” Emily stopped when she noticed her granddaughter. “Rory!”

Rory ran straight into her grandmother’s arms. “Merry Christmas, Grandma.”

“Merry Christmas to you too, darling.” Then, to Lorelai. “It wouldn’t kill you to dress your daughter like a little lady, you know?” Emily passed her hand through her granddaughter’s hair and shook her head in disapproval.

Well, that sure hadn’t taken long in coming. Rory just touched her hair curiously. “It was the wind. Today was Rory’s first ride in the shot--- gun---” Emily just blinked, unimpressed. Lorelai sighed. “I’m sorry, mother, I’ll fix it before anyone else notices it.”

---

Inside the visitor’s bathroom, Lorelai closed the door behind them, focusing on finding a brush between the toiletries in the drawers.

“We’ll never fit in, will we?” came Rory’s small voice.

Lorelai sighed again. She remembered hiding here during stupid Christmas dinners. She remembered boring conversations ‘needing’ her presence in the next room and how everybody had looked at her funnily when she'd actually tried to add something. “We don’t need to.” She tried to smile. “That’s why we have each other.” Then she spied something behind Rory. “Aha!”

Both laughed when Lorelai brandished the brush in her hand. “Now come here, let’s make everybody jealous of your gorgeous hair.”
