MORNING AFTER

by Leni

"Okay, now this is weird."

Xander glanced at the woman beside him, her red hair in disarray across his favourite pillow. "Tell me about it," he muttered.

He hadn't been surprised to find Willow at his side after waking up. After all, in the last years they often fell asleep together when they happened to be in the same city, too tired to return to their own beds after a night of telling each other the stories of their travels and adventures. But this time he had also seen a very uncovered shoulder next to his, followed by the knowledge that he was a very uncovered Xander under the sheet.

He remembered the bottle of tequila Willow had brought from her tour through Mexico City and sighed. It was a fact, Scoobies plus alcohol was a very bad mix. Then he frowned when he felt the lonely sheet over him sliding away. He grabbed it and tugged.

"Xander!" Willow complained. "I want to get up."

He looked at her and grinned slowly. "Bad time for modesty, Wills," he teased her. Willow just glared at him and huffed. Xander, still keeping a strong hold on the sheet, made an inviting gesture with his free hand. "But please, be my guest." He winked.

"Pig." Willow stuck her tongue out at him.

He laughed. "It's not as if we have anything to hide now, do we?"

Willow appeared to give that some thought, but then just shook her head and tugged the sheet to herself. "Hey!" Xander cried out and held his ground.

"You're being childish!" she accused him.

"Says the sheets hogger," he countered.

"Give me! I refuse to parade around naked."

He didn't give her anything. "Well, I refuse to stay here naked."

Willow rolled her eyes. "I've seen you naked before. Remember? Sixth grade?" She waited until he nodded. "See? It's not big deal."

"Hey!"

"I meant..."

He gave her the most hurt look a man his age could possibly muster. Willow was instantly reminded of the time she'd had to tell him that Santa Claus didn't exist. "At least now I know you don't want me just for my body," he pouted

She giggled and relaxed her grasp on the sheet just a bit. Xander took his chance and tugged as hard as he could. He was standing up before Willow could react. Sheet secured at his waist, he looked at his friend and was greeted by lots of skin half covered by the pillows. "Damn."

"Cheater." Willow hugged the pillow a little tighter. "You just wanted to see me naked."

"I'm just a man, Wills." Xander shrugged. Willow pouted even more, adding her special Xander-You-Can't-Do-This-To-Me eyes for good measure. She had developed them all through primary school and she was sure they still worked. They didn't.

Xander just bent to give her a kiss on her cheek and went to grab a robe. Then he felt the knot at his waist freeing itself. "Ah ah ah," he shook an accusing finger at Willow, "no magic before breakfast." He looked at the guilty woman, who more than guilty looked mischievous. Xander found that he was really fond of that look. "Okay, I'll play nice and bring you an omelette."

Willow smiled and looked at him expectantly.

"With cheese and ham," he allowed.

She raised an eyebrow.

He sighed. "And that awful green stuff you love so much. I'll add it myself, even."

"Brocoli!" Willow grinned, not minding her appearance anymore. "You must really love me." Her eyes widened and she brough both hands to her mouth, slapping it lightly.

Xander looked at her and took gently one hand in his. "I always did, Willowgirl."

"We didn't screw this, did we?"

Xander thought about it. He was supposed to be in mourning, but this hadn't been wrong. He knew Willow was aware that she'd never occupy Anya's place in his heart, just as Anya had known Willow kept a piece of his love solely for her. How could this night had been a mistake? No, it had felt as if it was long overdue and if this morning had began so strangely, well, why should they go against the wackiness that had been their life? He shook his head.

Willow smiled, thinking that even nights of tequila lead to good things. It had been weird, waking up next to a man after so many years. But she had loved Xander long before she cared whether to love boys or girls, Willow knew their friends would wonder what had happened to her being lesbian, but she also knew that when they saw who she'd chosen they'd understand.

Both thought that they needed to go slower from now on. Mistakes were to be corrected; they had a whole life ahead to make up for this first morning together.
