The Real World:
Ancient Greece

A WebQuest
PROCESS:
INTRODUCTION
TASK
1.  Your teacher will assign your group to either Athens or Sparta.  Decide amongst yourselves who will take on each role.

Athens                Sparta
                         Male citizen                 Male citizen
                         Female citizen              Female citizen
                         Slave                         Helot
                         Child                          Child
                         Metic                          Perioeci (perieoki)

2. Once you have chosen a role you must answer some questions to make you familiar with your new identity.  The questions can be found on the
"Getting to know your Greek" worksheet.  In addition, you must come up with three of your own questions that you think need to be answered in order for you to successfully become your character.  The resources section has web sites that will help you answer these questions.  Make sure that you read the labels of the sites so you do not get off task looking at web sites that will not help you. If you cannot find an answer there, ask your teacher for help searching the rest of the web.

3. To help you get into character, you will write a diary entry that your character would have written at the time describing a typical day in his/her life.

4. Draw a picture or take a picture from the Internet (remember to cite your source!) that demonstrates what you would look like.  The producer of the show will review the combination of the picture and diary entry, much like MTV reviews audition tapes.

5. When everyone in your group has finished the first four steps, you will get together and share your diary entries.  Brainstorm what your episode of the show should be about.
Consider your characters' relationships with each other. They could be members of the same family or complete strangers. Think of an appropriate place to set the scence of this episode (ex: marketplace, dinner table, etc.). You must discuss at least three of the following topics in your script...
  • Mythology/Gods/Religion
  • Olympics/Sports
  • Persian Wars
  • Differences between city-states
  • Government
  • Geography
  • Trade/Farming
6.  You each must take responsibility for coming up with your own lines and costumes.  No one else is an expert on your character.  You will be graded on how well you work with your group, as well as your transformation into character (see rubric in Evaluation section.)

7. You will be taping a live performance of your episode.  This will be done in front of the class.  At the end of the taping, we will bring you back for a reunion special where audience members will ask you questions.  Everyone in your group is responsible for answering at least one question.  Remember to stay in character!
