JODI - in her own words: "After the course I worked in Ashburton for the Radio Network then in Auckland for IRN. I didn't rate life at IRN very highly - the work was fun but the environment there was pretty crap. So I decided to have a bash at just being a writer for a few years since that was my underlying passion all along. I rented a bach in Leigh for a year and wrote part time. Then I got cajoled back into my old medical publishing job for a year last year. I thought it would be good to still have a writing goal so I aimed to get into Bill Manhires' writing workshops in Wellington. No one actually gets into those courses, but somehow (through some clerical error no doubt) I got into both prose and poetry workshops. So I felt the Fates were directing me to a year in Wellington. I feel I know what I am about as a creative writer now and feel I could carry on more in my spare time. So I am going to head back to Auckland to look for a serious job again - maybe one that uses journo and editing skills. So that's me." Jodi's now working at a mag in Auckland.

JULIA is in Wellington working at NZPA. Her and Tim decided to leave Dublin in May 2002, after nearly three years writing for the Irish Sun. Christmas in New Zealand in 2001 taught her the grass is always greener at home - and she'll be 31. Grown-up plans include buying a house in Wellington with a separate laundry, because knickers don't belong in the kitchen with the pavlova. So Julia's planning her trip home the slow way, through Russia by train, Mongolia by horse and China by junk. The last leg to NZ by waka is tempting, but she'd like to be home before 2005, so will take a nasty plane.

Since the last update, Julia's been to Scotland with Kim and Greg, pictured, and Italy with her NZ man Tim (coz Masterton people stick together). Must be something in the Wairarapa water ... something sticky. She's desperately trying to squeeze in all the Irish things she's been meaning to do for the last three years - like visit her sponsored donkey in a County Cork animal sanctuary and float down the Shannon River in a wooden canal boat. Julia has a huge soft spot for the Irish but her advice is: "Watch your back, your brain and your sense of direction!"
