James Mc Loughlin
1895 - 1966
James Mc Loughlin was born in Enfield, Co. Meath in 1895. He joined the Royal Garrison Artillery and served with them during World War 1. He served in France and Belgium with Heavy artillery batteries and Trench Mortar Batteries and participated in the great artillery duel of Passchendaele. He served for a period in the Sudan and was wounded twice. During the war he was the hero of a famous artillery engagement when he saved a battery under his command from capture by the Germans.

After World War 1, he served with the Royal Garrison Artillery at Charles Fort, Kinsale in County Cork, Ireland. In August 1923 during the Irish Civil War, he joined the Free State army seeing active service in the Kinsale area. James commanded the post at Innishannon and was involved in a number of engagements against anti-treaty forces in this area. He also captured Sean Moylan, who later became a Fianna Fail T.D.

In 1925 he was transferred to the Artillery Corps being posted to Kildare.
He served as Director of Artillery from 1949 to 1955. He retired to Whitehall, Dublin where he died in 1966.
