| ACTIVITIES AND NEEDS |
| The institution has great needs in the following areas: 1.Feeding programme: Immediately the centre was opened we emberked on a feeding programme to carter for the welfare of these ovcs. Although we are doing our level best to ensure that they are well fed so that they can concentrate in class work, our limited resources sometimes cannot carter adequately for the food they require on a daily basis. 2.School laboratories: The centre is currently in form three and the students are supposed to take their first kenya certificate of secondary education (k.c.s.e.) next year (2006). However, the centre is still lacking chemistry, biology and physics laboratories. we rely on using the neighbouring schools laboratories for our prcticals as far as the three vital subjects are concerned. this is always paid for on every visit made. an urgent need to erect one to serve all these subjects is always haunting us. 3.School Equipments: There is a need to have a well-equiped library to help the students do better research on what they have covered and yet to cover. Supply of new syllabus books to these children is also an urgent issue as the books will enable them to cover relevant topics reccommended by the ministry of education. the few books we currently have, are either used by teachers as reference materials or text to help them make notes for the students.Other materials that the school still lacks are: (a) Exercise books, (b) Office supplies and, (c) Mathematical equipments among others. 4. Personal effects of the children: All the chilren are lacking uniform of the school. some of them do not have uniform of any kind while others are using the uniforms they had in their previous schools. Though this is not a seriuos problem, we feel that some donors cannot understand while the centre operating as a school can allow children to have dotted clothes and various types of uniforms. besides uniform, these children need personal effects to carter for their welfare especially girls. 5.Own premise: The centre is currently being run in a hired premise. This sometimes becomes very difficult because any failure to remit rental fees in time subjects the centre in a lot of problems. secondly, running a centre in a hired premise is not cost-effective as it squanders a lot of money that would have been used to take good care of these children. 6.Volunteer teachers: Apart from the director, the principal and the deputy principal who are also doubling as class teachers, all other teachers are volunteers and given that they are not stakeholders in KOCA, they are easily swayed whenever there is a wind of change. Their stay, which is always shortlived, is also detrimental to nurturing the academic exellence in these children. |
