The sensation of fingers on her wrist stayed with her as she took the elevator up to her floor. She made it past the doorman easily with a nod rather than the usual hi and felt no guilt, even if he did notice that there was something odd going on. She stopped to grab her mail as usual and would throw it on the ever growing pile of questions, demands, and pizza coupons that she always promised herself to think about later but had yet to make time for.
She made apologies to herself about the state of her apartment and promised to clean it as she maneuvered past the bicycle in the hallway and the piles of books in the living room. In the bedroom she found her most comfortable pair jeans, the cotton gone so soft they were threadbare at the knees and an old grayed t-shirt. Most importantly she found a pair of thick wool hiking socks and pulled them on. She looked at what remained of her shoes and immediately put them in the trash.
Walking through the living room she went to the kitchen and grabbed a glass from the cupboard, threw in some ice cubes and filled the rest with gin, silently cursing the lack of lemons in her fridge. She returned to the living room and curled herself into the corner of the couch, much as she had in the car, and waited.
The phone rang and she answered, hung up quickly, and continued to wait. The doorbell rang. She walked to the door, catching her hip on the bicycle's handlebars, and opened it, motioned Olivia into her home.
"You could have stayed parked where you were."
"It was a handicapped zone."
"Most people wouldn't care."
"I'm not most people."
